Anybody know where I can download any free games where you have to work out clues and hints to move to the next stage or level etc, like mystery or adventure games.

Most free adventure games are flash, so you're supposed to play them online, not download them.
Free games are usually flash because if the developers aren't charging you money to BUY the game, they have to make money off you seeing ads on their website while you play. The developers have to get money somehow or other or they can't afford to make any more games.
